This section describes the definition and objective of NAT64.
NAT64 inherits the traditional NAT technology mechanism, but translates the whole packet format from IPv4 to IPv6 or from IPv6 to IPv4.
Feature |
Before NAT |
After NAT |
|---|---|---|
Traditional NAT |
A private IPv4 address as the source IP address |
A public IPv4 address as the source IP address |
NAT64 |
An IPv6 (or IPv4) packet format |
An IPv6 (or IPv4) packet format |
A top issue in the IPv6 network evolution is the incompatibility and communication between IPv4 and IPv6 networks. NAT64 translates between IPv4 and IPv6 network addresses and protocols for bidirectional communication.
