BGP uses TCP as the transport layer protocol. To enhance BGP security, you can perform the Message Digest 5 (MD5) authentication or Keychain authentication when you set up a TCP connection is set up. The MD5 authentication or Keychain authentication, however, does not authenticate BGP packets. Instead, it sets the authentication password for the TCP connection, and the authentication is performed by TCP. If authentication fails, the TCP connection cannot be established.
