Application Scenarios for Mail Filtering

This section describes typical application scenarios for mail filtering.

Mail Server Deployed on the Intranet

As shown in Figure 1, the FW serves as the intranet security gateway, and the mail server is deployed on the intranet. Intranet users send and receive email through the mail server.

Mail filtering is configured on the FW to provide the following functions:

  • Preventing junk email
  • Preventing anonymous email
  • Controlling email transmission using mail address checks.
  • Controlling the number and size of email attachments to avoid information leaks.

Mail Server Deployed on the Internet

As shown in Figure 2, the FW serves as the intranet security gateway, and the mail server is hosted in a remote server farm.

Mail filtering is configured on the FW to prevent anonymous email, control email transmission, and control the number and size of email attachments.
