Overview of Ping Proxy

The FW can function as a ping proxy to respond to massive ping requests, preventing server's normal services from being affected by ping requests.

After you configure ping proxy, the FW between the server and clients will respond to ping requests in the place of the server, as shown in Figure 1. After you enable ping proxy, the FW will send ICMP probe packets at the specified interval to check the server status.
  • If the FW receives a response packet from the server, the server status is Up.

  • If the FW does not receive any response packet from the server and the number of probes reaches Maximum tries, the server status is Down.

After receiving a ping request from a client, the FW responds to the ping request based on the detected server status. If the server status is Up, the FW sends a ping response. If the server status is Down, the FW discards the ping request without any response.
