The holdtime assert command sets the timeout period for all PIM interfaces to keep the Assert state on the local FW.
The undo holdtime assert command restores the default timeout.
| Parameter | Description | Value |
|---|---|---|
interval |
Specifies the time during which the PIM interface keeps the Assert state. |
The value is an integer that ranges from 7 to 65535, in seconds. |
By default, the timeout period for all PIM interfaces to keep the Assert state on the local FW is 180 seconds.
If the FW s in the shared network segment receive the same multicast packet on their own forwarding interfaces, they immediately send Assert messages. After all PIM devices in the shared network segment receive Assert messages, these FW s elect the unique forwarder and refresh the outgoing interface lists corresponding to the (*, G) and (S, G) entries. That is, redundant outgoing interfaces are pruned.
Then, the assert winner forwards multicast data, whereas the assert loser does not forward multicast data before the Assert state timer times out. The Assert winner then periodically sends assert messages to maintain its status as the Assert winner. If the Assert loser does not receive any assert messages from the Assert winner after the timer of the Assert state timer expires, the loser restores the pruned interface to forward packets. A new round of Assert election is therefore triggered.
This command is valid for PIM-SM and PIM-DM.
This command functions in the same way as the pim holdtime assert command in the interface view, except for the view. By default, if no configuration is done on the interface, the value configured in the PIM view is used; otherwise, the value configured in the interface view is used.
