Overview of Data Filtering

This section describes the definition and objective of data filtering.

Definition

Data filtering is a security mechanism used to filter the contents of files and applications passing through a FW.

Objective

The Internet is widely used by employees to browse web pages, search for information, send and receive mails, and post information on forums and microblogs.

However, the following problems may occur when employees access the Internet:

  • Leaks of confidential information if employees upload or post confidential information to the Internet
  • Adverse effects on or legal risks to the enterprise if employees browse, post, or spread illegal information
  • Decrease of work efficiency if employees browse or search for non-work-related content.

Therefore, enterprises demand a solution that ensures employees' proper access to the Internet and filters the content of sent and received messages.

The FW, which is equipped with the data filtering function, meets this demand. It filters the content of files and applications that pass through the FW. The main functions of data filtering are as follows:

  • Prevents the transmission of confidential information and reduces the risk of information leaks.
  • Reduces the legal risks to the enterprise caused by employees' browsing, posting, or transmitting sensitive information.
  • Improves employees' work efficiency by preventing them from browsing and searching for non-work-related content.
