Understanding URL Filtering and Application Control

This section describes the combination of URL filtering and application control.

URL filtering can control web access behaviors of a certain type of websites, but URL filtering cannot implement fine-grained applications. With the rapid development of applications and web access, URL filtering and application control need to be used together in some cases to develop a comprehensive web access control policy. For example, a company requires employees not to access social networking websites except Facebook. In addition, only marketing employees can access all Facebook applications, and other employees can only read Facebook articles and cannot use other Facebook applications. To meet this requirement, URL filtering and application control must be used together. URL filtering allows employees to access only Facebook but not other social networking websites. Application control implements fine-grained control on the access to Facebook applications.
