Restoring the BootLoader Password

This section describes how to restore the BootLoader password if it is lost.

Context

The BootLoader provides functions, such as configuration recovery and system software upgrade, which are the basis for device security and device maintenance. The password for the BootLoader is very important and should be kept safe.

If the BootLoader password is lost, press the RST button to restore the device to factory settings. After the device is restored to factory settings, the BootLoader password is also restored to empty. For security purposes, set a new BootLoader password in a timely manner and keep it secure.

Procedure

  1. Press RST on the panel to restore the factory settings.

Method: After the device is powered on for a period of time, press and hold the RST button on the panel for at least 5 seconds, and then release the button. The device restarts with the factory settings.

  2. Re-set the original configuration file as the startup software for the next startup.

After the factory settings are restored, the original configuration file is not affected, but you need to re-set the configuration file for the next startup. The procedure is as follows:

    1. Check whether the current configuration file is consistent with the startup configuration file.
        <sysname> display startup
         MainBoard:
          Configured startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
          Startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
          Next startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
Startup saved-configuration file: NULL //Startup with the null configuration file this time
Next startup saved-configuration file: NULL //Startup with the null configuration file the next time
          Startup paf file: default
          Next startup paf file: default
          Startup license file: default
          Next startup license file: default
          Startup patch package: NULL
          Next startup patch package: NULL
    2. Set the configuration file for the next startup to the original configuration file before the factory settings are restored.
<sysname> startup saved-configuration vrpcfg.zip //The original configuration file name is specified.
Info: Succeeded in setting the configuration for booting system.
    3. Check whether the configuration is successful.
        <sysname> display startup
        MainBoard:
          Configured startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
          Startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
          Next startup system software: hda1:/sup-new.bin
          Startup saved-configuration file: NULL
Next startup saved-configuration file: hda1:/vrpcfg.zip //Set the original configuration file for the next startup.
          Startup paf file: default
          Next startup paf file: default
          Startup license file: default
          Next startup license file: default
          Startup patch package: NULL
          Next startup patch package: NULL
    4. Restart the device.
        <sysname> reboot //Restart.
Info: The system is now comparing the configuration, please wait........
Warning: The configuration has been modified, and it will be saved to the next startup saved-configuration file hda1:/vrpcfg.zip.
Continue? [Y/N]:n //Do not save the configuration change of this operation. Otherwise, the original configuration file will be overwritten.
Info: If want to reboot with saving diagnostic information, input 'N' and then execute 'reboot save diagnostic-information'.
System will reboot! Continue?[Y/N]:y //Confirm to restart.
  3. Set a new BootLoader password.
When the message "Press Ctrl+B to break auto startup..." is displayed during the device startup, press Ctrl+B within 3 seconds to access the BootLoader main menu, set a new BootLoader password, and enter 1 to continue the device startup.
