Configuring an IPv6 over IPv4 Tunnel Using the CLI

IPv6 over IPv4 tunnels are categorized into manual tunnels, GRE tunnels, automatic tunnels, 6to4 tunnels, 6RD tunnels, and ISATAP tunnels.

Configuring an IPv6 over IPv4 Manual Tunnel: In an IPv6 over IPv4 manual tunnel, the source address and destination address are statically specified. Therefore, this tunnel is a simple P2P one.

Configuring an IPv6 over IPv4 GRE Tunnel: The IPv6 over IPv4 GRE tunnel is a simple point-to-point one. Compared with the manual tunnel, this tunnel has enhanced security.

Configuring an IPv6 over IPv4 Automatic Tunnel: The IPv6 over IPv4 automatic tunnel is a point-to-multipoint one. Such tunnels use the IPv4-compatible IPv6 addresses.

Configuring a 6to4 Tunnel: 6to4 tunnels are point-to-multipoint (P2MP) tunnels that connect to isolated IPv6 domains. 6to4 tunnels use IPv4-embedded IPv6 addresses.

Configuring a 6RD Tunnel: 6RD tunnels are point-to-multipoint tunnels that connect carriers' IPv4 networks to IPv6 domains. They are widely applied to carriers' networks.

Configuring an ISATAP Tunnel: ISATAP tunnels are used by IPv4/IPv6 hosts on an IPv4 network to access resources on an IPv6 network. ISATAP tunnels can be established between ISATAP hosts and border devices.
